hydrocephalus
Meet our oh so sweet Robert! He, first and most importantly, is our child, a curious mind, mom’s kitchen helper, bike-riding lover, sunset watcher, smile-spreader, JOY. He also has a condition known as Hydrocephalus, an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid on the brain. I met this sweet soul in 2017 after graduating college and moving to Liberia, West Africa to do mission work with His Safe Haven, an organization committing to providing hope, care, and love to those with special needs and their families. Upon arriving, I spent my first day driving around the city meeting with families we were aiming to empower in the care of their child. What I found at our last stop of the day, in fact, was not a family, but my sweet son, alone and abandoned in the dusty Liberian dirt. I unfortunately have met, served, and witnessed many children neglected or abandoned in developing countries due to their diagnosis, but this was different. I picked up Robert and knew he was my son. My soul and heart were created to love his, and we have been together since meeting that day. I have watched him grow in so many ways over the past two years! When meeting, Robert was four but his development was at the level of a newborn, as he had been neglected and without medical treatment for so long. His head was larger than that of most grown adults, yet his body was the size of a 12 month old. This created quite the obstacle to overcome! With much perseverance & drive, he is now able to support his own head, crawl, walk with a walker, talk & comprehend at grade-level, and get to sitting on his own. He is a walking miracle! I am blessed to be able to have a front-row seat to his amazing life - the most amazing piece of it being that he, after abuse, neglect, abandonment, and medical adversity, is the most joyful and loving person I know. His spirit is a light to the world. It has been an incredible process filled with ups & downs, and we still are working through paperwork and medical needs combined! We are humbled and thankful for this opportunity for support!
